Meet the Orthodontist

The family practice of Mellion Orthodontics has been serving the Akron-Canton area for nearly three decades. Drs. Joseph and Nicholas Mellion, brothers and natives of Akron, OH, opened their orthodontic practice in 1980, and were joined in 2006 by Dr. Joe’s oldest son, Dr. Zachary Mellion. Drs. Joe, Nick, and Zach provide orthodontic treatment for both children and adults, including individuals that require special needs, cleft palate treatment, TMJ therapy, and multidisciplinary care. Drs. Joe, Nick, and Zach are active members of the community, belong to many professional organizations, and serve on the Craniofacial Team at Akron Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Joseph T. Mellion

Dr. Joe earned his D.D.S. degree at Case Western Reserve University in 1978 and his Master’s degree in Orthodontics at Saint Louis University in 1980. Dr. Joe is a past president of the Ohio Dental Association and has held numerous positions in both national and local professional organizations. He currently serves as Executive Director of the Orthodontic Education and Research Foundation at Saint Louis University and is an Emeritus council member of the Akron Dental Society. In 1999, Dr. Joe was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Merit Award for service to the Department of Orthodontics at Saint Louis University. Dr. Joe resides in Akron, OH with his wife, Dianne, and they have three children, Zachary, Sarah, and Alex. Dr. Joe runs nearly 7 miles every morning and also enjoys traveling, hiking, and playing the piano.

Dr. Nicholas P. Mellion

Dr. Nick received his D.D.S. degree at Ohio State University in 1978 and his M.S.D. degree in Orthodontics at Saint Louis University in 1980. Dr. Nick is a past president of the Saint Louis University Orthodontic Education and Research Foundation and along with Drs. Joe and Zach, belongs to the American Dental Association, American Association of Orthodontists, Cleveland Society of Orthodontists, and the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics. Dr. Nick lives in Canton, OH with his wife, Jeanette, and they have two children, Nathan and Theresa. Dr. Nick is an avid golfer and also spends his time playing tennis, fishing, and picture framing.

Dr. Zachary J. Mellion

Dr. Zach earned his D.M.D. degree at Case Western Reserve University in 2004 and his Master’s degree in Orthodontics at Saint Louis University in 2006. Dr. Zach received the 2007 Thomas M. Graber Award, which recognizes one of the top research studies in Orthodontics. He currently serves on the Subcouncil for the New Dentist at the Ohio Dental Association and is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Orthodontics at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Zach and his wife, Dr. Keira, a veterinarian in Cleveland, OH, live in Akron with their two Golden Retrievers, Kramer and Kozmo. Dr. Zach stays active by regularly cycling and mountain biking and he also enjoys golf and running.
