Invisalign Treatment: The Innovative and Practically Invisible Way To Straighten Your Teeth

What is Invisalign Treatment?

Everybody wants perfect teeth to display their smile confidently, but the thought of metal (or clear) braces can sometimes deter people from pursuing a smile transformation. Invisalign is the perfect orthodontic treatment alternative for braces that perfectly aligns teeth without the hassle of wires and metals.

Invisalign is a custom-made series of clear aligners that provide steady and gentle pressure to move the teeth into their correct alignment over time. The aligners can be taken in and out, so they are easy to live with and increase the ability for patients to keep their teeth clean. And the best part is that they are practically invisible. At Mellion Orthodontics, you will get your best smile with our personalized Invisalign treatment.

Advantages of Invisalign Treatment: Braces vs. Invisalign

Aligners are a perfect alternative to traditional braces for people of all age groups to achieve their best smile. Clear aligners provide some significant benefits over braces in the following ways.
In medical terms, the teeth are located within the jawbone and surrounded by the periodontal ligament. The periodontal ligament has elastic properties that causes the teeth to to revert to their original position once the orthodontic forces are removed. That is why we recommend retainers be worn properly after the braces are removed.

  • Comfortable Treatment: While braces are very effective at moving teeth, they are often perceived as bulkly because of the brackets and metal wires. Clear aligners are much thinner, smoother, and often more comfortable to wear throughout treatment.
  • Confidence: If the look for traditional braces makes you uncomfortable smiling, clear aligners such as Invisalign are a good choice for you. It is practically invisible and esthetic, so no one has to know you’re straightening your teeth. Aligners can boost your confidence to smile.
  • Proper Oral Care: Since the trays are removable, you can easily remove them while caring for your oral health. Brushing and flossing are much easier than with traditional braces because you don’t have to worry about the brackets and wires.
  • Food Freedom: Orthodontic treatment with traditional braces requires a commitment to avoid certain types of hard and sticky foods that can cause the brackets to come unglued from the teeth. The advantage of Invisalign is that you can keep your same dietary habits without worrying about slowing down your treatment. But just remember to put the trays back in your mouth immediately after finishing eating or drinking!
  • Faster Result: Clear aligner treatment delivers a fantastic smile result, often within a relatively short period of time. The average duration for the completion of Invisalign treatment ranges between 6 months to 2 years, depending on the severity, while traditional braces can often take 1 to 3 years to achieve the desired result.

Step 1: Initial Assessment

The first phase of the treatment starts with an initial consultation. Your first visit will involve a thorough evaluation of your smile.  We will assess your oral health, your bite, and ultimately your tooth alignment by utilizing photos, X-rays, and a 3D scan of your teeth and bite.  With all of this information, you will have a one-on-one meeting with one of our orthodontists to plan your ideal Invisalign treatment.

Step 2: Treatment Plan

When the patient agrees to proceed with the treatment, the 3D model of the teeth is then instantly sent to the lab to create the custom-made, clear Invisalign aligners. Over a few weeks, our orthodontists will review the computerized treatment models in order to create an effective and efficient clear aligner sequence. When the trays arrive at our office, you will receive your first aligners. We will try them to ensure proper fit and finish, and also review all of the necessary at-home care procedures with you.  As a reminder, the patient must wear the aligner for 20+ hours for best results and is advised to remove it only for eating or oral care.

Step 3: Periodic In-Office Visits

We will be monitoring your progress with periodic in-office visits with our orthodontists.  The trays should be changed every 7-14 days–the exact schedule is dependent on the specific tooth movement outlined by your customized treatment plan.  Treatment is an ongoing process of changing the trays until all of the prescribed aligners are finished.    After treatment is completed, we will provide retainers and regular follow-up visits to help maintain your beautiful smile.
