Elastics
Elastics, or rubber bands, are an important part of orthodontic treatment for many patients. They attach to specific points on your braces and apply a controlled force to help correct your bite and guide your teeth and jaws into proper alignment.
When prescribed, elastics should be worn exactly as directed and changed twice a day to maintain the proper force. Consistent wear is essential to keeping your treatment progressing as planned.
Please Note: Not wearing your elastics as prescribed can slow tooth movement and may extend your overall treatment time. Your cooperation plays an important role in achieving the best possible results.
Tips for Wearing Elastics
Here are some helpful tips for getting the most out of your orthodontic elastics:
- Replace your elastics with a fresh set twice a day. Elastics lose their strength and elasticity with use, so changing them every morning and evening helps maintain consistent force throughout your treatment.
- Remove your elastics when brushing and eating, unless your orthodontist has given you different instructions. Put your elastics back on as soon as you’re finished, using a fresh set when it’s time for your scheduled change.
- Carry extra elastics with you so you can replace one immediately if it breaks or is lost.
- Don’t run out of elastics. If your supply is getting low, contact our office so you can continue treatment without interruption.
- Let us know if your elastics are breaking frequently. Frequent breakage may indicate that your braces need an adjustment.
