Pain & Soreness
How Much Pain Is Normal?
It is normal to experience some mild soreness or pressure for a few days after your braces are placed or adjusted. This temporary discomfort is a normal part of your teeth beginning to respond to orthodontic forces.
You may also notice some irritation of your cheeks, lips, or tongue as your mouth adjusts to your new braces. This typically improves as the tissues become accustomed to the brackets and wires.
Tips for Soreness Relief
- Choose soft foods such as yogurt, pasta, eggs, smoothies, and soup for the first few days.
- Rinse with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt to 8 ounces of warm water) to help soothe irritated areas.
- Use orthodontic wax over brackets or wires that are rubbing against your cheeks or lips.
- Drink cool water or use a cold compress on the outside of your mouth for temporary relief.
- If needed, an over-the-counter pain reliever may help. Follow the package directions and check with your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about which medication is appropriate for you.
Most discomfort is temporary and improves as your mouth adjusts. If you experience significant, persistent, or worsening pain, please contact our office—we’re happy to help!
Sports Mouthguards
If you participate in sports or other physical activities, protecting your teeth and braces is important. We can provide a specially designed orthodontic mouthguard to help protect your teeth, brackets, and soft tissues during play for a minimal fee.
As your teeth move throughout treatment, we can reform and adjust the mouthguard at your regular appointments to ensure it continues to fit properly and provide protection.
Be sure to wear your mouthguard during practices and games whenever there is a risk of contact or injury. Ask our team about getting a custom-fitted orthodontic mouthguard.
